The plug-in Hybrid Volvo XC60 bound to be unveiled at the Detroit MC
January 17th 2012
The plug-in Hybrid technology is the choice of Volvo for its XC60, the environment friendly car. No information about it has been given so far. Everything will be exhibited at the Detroit Motor from January 9 to 22 2012.
Concerning this Volvo XC60, a simple push (by the driver) on a button, will be required to operate the vehicle, and a 280 hp petrol engine is coupled with an electric motor of 70 horsepower.
Everything is well thought out, since the batteries of the electric motor can be charged at home. The use of the convemtional engine is not needed on short distances.
On this model, it is possible to choose between three types of Drive mode. The first is called "Pure Mode", which can run for 30 mi on electric mode only, according to the European NEDC standard.
The second mode is called "Hybrid". Its default mode is a combination of both engines, automatically activated at boot of the car. It combines performance + low power (2.3l/60 mi) + low emissions (53 g / km CO2) + long battery life (595 mi).
The third and last mode, the "Power" is suited for sporty driving. Both engines set off to bring the XC60 to unexpected performance by developing a power of 350 horses! 6.1 seconds will be sufficient to reach 62 mph. !
The high-end technology by Volvo
A final characteristic, but not the least, is found on this car. It can "change" into a 4x4. With its front wheels powered by the gasoline engine and its rear wheels controlled by the electric motor, AWD mode enhances traction on startup, while providing better adhesion on wet ground or snow. Thanks to a central control, the distribution of these engines is performed electronically.
